Even Uncle Orson Approves!
Jun. 7th, 2009 12:04 pmI'm thinking about going to see Star Trek again. Yes, that would make four times. And your point is what, exactly? After all, even extremely hard-to-please Orson Scott Card loved it!
His words? I wonder if this might not be the best space-adventure movie ever made.
Seriously...just wow...this film is that good. Sigh...

Date: Jun. 7th, 2009 06:53 pm (UTC)I'm just shocked he admits to liking it, is all. He's such a nitpicker and he's so anti-Trek that him having nice things to say at all blows me away. He's still as bitter as ever, but even a grain of nice from him is huge.
I'm likely not going anywhere...just thinking. Incidentally, I've read many of OSC's books, and I've got to say that for the most part (at least for me) they are vastly overrated. Ender's Game is phenomenal, but the series that followed it? Ugh. Booooring. And the other series? I can't even bring myself to read them after the whole Piggies debacle. (I did read the entire series...I kept thinking it would get better...um, not so much.) They weren't the worst books ever, but they were also certainly no ground-breakers.

Date: Jun. 7th, 2009 07:07 pm (UTC)I've been ignoring him so hard for so long I didn't even know he hated Trek, but it doesn't surprise me. Given that added context, I shall indulge in a moment's happy gloating.
*gloats happily*
I think Card, like the early Piers Anthony, tended to get a good idea, write one or two really good books, and then flog the damned thing to muddy, miserable death. I loved the original Ender's Game -- the short story! -- and skipped the book because I couldn't see that extending it to novel length could ever be more than a step sideways. I did enjoy Speaker For the Dead, but not enough to buy it. And I loved the first Alvin Maker book: Seventh Son is still on my re-read list. So is Songmaster (which included homoerotic themes. Go figure.)

I agree with your assessment of his works, too, from what I've read. I loved Ender's Game, and I really liked Ender's Shadow (quite possibly more than Ender's Game) but the others? Meh.

And OSC did flog the sequels to Ender's Game to death. The original sequels could have been awesome but I got so bogged down in the philosophy (and left the piggies hanging) it got boring.
But the Shadow series was different. He could have compressed them into 2 books instead of 4 but they were very entertaining and resonated a lot with what is going on in the world today.

I do want to see the movie again, but I'm not sure I can justify it. I do have a free movie ticket, though, so we shall see.
And agreed on the Ender and Shadow series. I haven't read the latest Ender book, but otherwise I quite agree with you. Though I did find that the Ender series got better toward the end. Ender's game rocked, then the next couple not so hot for me, but by the last book or two I was back into it. The Jane angle was interesting to me.
