Wil Wheaton-May 20, 2009-Los Angeles, California (WWdN) -

DEPARTMENT OF GEEK AFFAIRS OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION

On behalf of the Department of Geek Affairs, I hereby make this special salute to Jonathan Coulton and hereby officially proclaim that Jonathan Coulton is the 2009 recipient of the Presidential d20 of Geekdom, in honor of his many contributions to Geek Culture. Jonathan Coulton, like Tom Lehrer and Al Yankovic before him, has and will continue to inspire geeks, dweebs, dorks, nerds, spazzes, dorkwads, and neo-maxi-zoom-dweebies forever with his unique musical talents.

Nice to see the Geek Affairs race was only the beginning.  This is more fun than a hold full of Terrifyn' Space Monkeys!

After a long campaign against the best and brightest geek luminaries, Wil Wheaton has emerged as the people’s choice to hold the office of the (yet to be officially recognized) Secretary of Geek Affairs.

Nearly 90,000 total votes were cast in determining the Geek Madness Tournament outcome, and Mr. Wheaton vanquished an impressive list of geek luminaries on his march to victory: Bruce Campbell, Wesley Crusher, Stephen Hawking, Steve Wozniak, Gabe & Tycho (Penny Arcade), and Joss Whedon.

Learn more about your new Secretary from his wikipedia entry, and from the man himself at his site.

And the winner is:

WIL WHEATON!

Despite a nail-biting race in which Joss Whedon put up one hell of a fight, there can be only one.

From the Whedonesque thread on the Geek Affairs race:

zeitgeist : Joss is a geek icon and a story/literary/film/musical theatre, Wil is a dyed-in-the-wool geek in more traditional senses.

Hunted : Is Joss a geek? I've never thought that. Hm...However Wil clearly IS, he built his own website. He used to (may still be doing for all i know) write his own html in notepad to update the site. He does weird and wonderful things with computers that I doubt Joss could (and he's on twitter!) - so I think Wil clearly is the bigger geek.

madmolly : When I think of geek, I think of Wil. When I think of Master, I think of Joss.

spooforbrains : Don't mean to be nitpicky, but the tag is incorrect. Wil only has one "l". And while Joss is my master, Wil is far and away the more geeky. And he understands issues that are important to his fellow geeks, like why DRM is very very bad. That sort of thing is not even on Joss's radar. So I know who my vote goes with.

Oh, spooforbrains...I think I love you.  After all, everyone knows Brent Spiner took the other "l".

Geek Affairs Update: It's down to the final battle, folks!  Wil Wheaton takes on Joss Whedon for the crown!  This one could go either way.  Wil had a commanding lead initially, but now Joss has surged ahead!  This is sure to go down to the wire!  Will wonderful Wil win?  Or will whimsical Whedon walk?

The choice is yours.  Go Vote!  http://www.paulandstorm.com/wha/geek-madness/

Expect more on this shortly.  Lots more.  And you know, if you're torn, I'll help you decide.  Just let me know, and I'll guide you.  In a completely unbiased way, of course.  Honest.  (Actually, I mean that.  I've done research.  Lots of it.  I can help.)  Oh, and remember that hate belongs nowhere in any sentence involving either one of these men.  Vote your conscience, but keep it clean, folks.  Hit above the belt, and keep things in perspective.

For anyone who read that and thought about a sport involving hoops and balls, well, I have only one thing to say:  "He don't know me very well, do he?"

For those of you who do, you know this post is about something much more important  than petty sport.  It's about stepping up to the mike and letting our collective geek voices be heard.  We're down to four contenders in the Secretary for Geek Affairs race!

This week's penultimate four showdown gives us Kaylee Frye taking on her creator, Joss Whedon, and Wil Wheaton squaring off against his friends Gabe and Tycho from over at Penny Arcade!  Ah, the choices are nearly overwhelming!  Make yours and go with it!  Boldly go, my friends, boldly go.  (And um...just ignore the icon...really...pay no attention to the man at the right...ahem...anyway...)

What are you still doing here?  Go vote, for the love of all things holy!

Vote, vote, vote!

I may be 400 miles from home, but I'm not on the trail yet. And there's wireless here at the start. So, there's no way I'm letting you all forget that the penultimate four will be determined tomorrow in the Geek Affairs race! Polls will reopen, too. Happy voting! I'm off to the most remote checkpoint of the race momentarily, but this post will be here to remind me to weigh in when I get back. See you at the polls!

I so thought I was done playing on the interwebs tonight, but, well, I'm not.  Why?

BECAUSE THE ROUND OF EIGHT HAS JUST OPENED FOR VOTING AT THE SECRETARY OF GEEK AFFAIRS SITE!

Whoa.  Sorry.  Got a little excited.  But who can blame me when these exciting battles are coming up?

Watch as Kaylee Frye dukes it out with Simon Pegg for the Do'urden crown while over in Bombadil John Hodgman takes on Gabe and Tycho!  Feel your pulse pound as Joss Whedon does battle with the sleeper Felicia Day and cheer as Wil Wheaton takes on Steve Wozniak fresh on the heels of his victory over none other than Stephen Hawking!  That round showed us every vote counts!  Make your voice heard!  Go vote!

From the Geek Sixteen, Round II:

Remember, you can vote HERE!

Wil

How did I draw Hawking?!  Man, I can’t even vote for *myself* in this one. (It is a rough gig, man.)

Dan Coulter
Since some of these were very hard, I voted for the ones that I would rather make out with. Needless to say, this means Wheaton, Belmont, Coulton and Day. Sorry Stan.  (L.M.F.A.O.)

William George Ferguson
The interesting thing about this group is the emergence of a blog/twitter Good Young Boy network. Wheaton, Coulton, Belmont, and Day all follow each other on twitter.  (It's a small world, after all...)

Ned
At some point I suppose it should matter to me that Stephen Hawking is not a US citizen and therefore is probably not going to be allowed to hold this office - should it ever exist and the appointee chosen via online voting tournament. Since I am torn here, I will say that the time for this to matter is now(Ned, you're my hero.)

Round II of the Geek 16 is open for voting!  So, hold off on those Horrible votes.  (They're open until March 20, and really, how are you going to decide your favorites quickly with so much lovely to choose from?)  Instead, get yourself over to the Geek Madness and pick your fave four! Who will it be?  Day or Lee?  Whedon or Coulton?  Wozniak or Belmont?  Wheaton or Hawking?  It's all up to you!  Four will triumph and four will take their dice and go home.  Their fates are in your hands.  Vote your conscience!
