"The core of the GI Joe fantasy is loyalty. The fantasy isn’t about shooting at Cobra, the fantasy is about ‘If I get left behind, Snake Eyes will come and get me.’ " - Larry Hama

Yep. That's it. That's why I love G.I. Joe. I know I shouldn't be surprised that Mister Hama gets it, and I'm not, but I am awfully glad he does. :)

GI-Joe-Retaliation-Poster

So, I finally saw this today. I say finally because while I don't see many movies in the theater anymore, I see those I care about in the theater and when I do so, I generally do so as soon as they come out because: 1-I wish to avoid spoilers. 2-I like the excitement of premieres. But life conspired against me in general this past little bit and while I adore the Joes, I wasn't dying to see this movie, so here we are two weeks or so out and I'm just now getting to it. Bottom line? B.

Overall, this movie was better than the last Joe offering. It told a better story. It really did. And it adhered to the comics canon a lot more. It cut a lot of the silly crap. But because of that, it didn't give me as many Joe fangirl nods, so in some ways it fell just a bit flat for me. So it's getting the same grade as Rise of Cobra from me. B.  But you know I can't just leave it at that. It's G.I. Joe. I'm going to talk for a while.

Recently, someone calling themselves @143SnakeEyes began following me on Twitter. I allowed this and followed back, because really...it's SNAKE-EYES. I mean, duh. Well, the other day, Snakes tweeted this:

@
143SnakeEyes
i went on thesaurus.com and searched, ninjas. The computer told me "Ninjas cannot be found" Well played, ninjas, well played

Now, grammar aside (which I'm not saying shit about, because, again...SNAKE-EYES), I found this tweet hilarious. I retweeted it. A friend did the same tonight, so I was reminded of it. So, guess what I did? Yep. I searched thesaurus.com for ninjas.

And, well...yeah.

Nice to know my favorite Arashikage clan member still doesn't lie to me. *grin* Well played indeed, ninjas.

One, I just found out that a very near mint copy of G.I. Joe #21 sold on ebay for $3010 last year. I told you it was a classic! I do own this comic, and mine's probably in very fine condition (using the mint-near mint-very fine-fine-good-fair-poor scale), but it's not for sale, thanks.

Two, I just found this video, which commits said comic to digital form and adds music. Gorgeous!

My OTP

You know, I claim not to have an OTP, and I'll stand by that in general. Sure, I like a lot of pairings of both persuasions, but there isn't one single perfect pairing out there for me. Except one. And since I'm capping images from last year's G.I. Joe movie tonight to amuse myself, well...yep. It's Snakes and Scarlett. The 2009 movie was amazingly inconsistent in its handling of this pair (and in only two hours, that's saying something), but there is one scene at the end that gets it right, like the homage I posted earlier tonight. And so, without further ado:

More G.I. Joe Ahead! )
jackwabbit: (Scarlett)
A million years ago (okay, last summer), I offered my thoughts on the new G.I. Joe movie here. Now, as anyone who's been around here long knows, I'm a huge fan of the Marvel G.I. Joe comics. Thus, it was hard for me not to fangirl nitpick the movie to death, but all in all, I concluded that we could have done much worse. However, there was one thing in this movie that they got dead right. One homage that is blatantly obvious to me but that would go flying over the head any average movie goer. I've been meaning to document it for ages, and I finally am. A pictorial documentation of this homage follows.

First, the comic... )

So, I was catching up on comics tonight (it is Thursday, you know), and after reading a few books, I filed some away. One book that was awaiting filing was that G.I. Joe 155 1/2 I mentioned a few weeks ago. Well, it finally made its way to its home tonight. Did I put it with the current IDW Joe line? Or with my new comics in general? Oh, hell no. That bad boy went into the Marvel G.I. Joe box, right behind its predecessor, G.I. Joe #155. Oh, and you know what? The back of issue 155 1/2 announces issue 156! It's due out in July! I cannot wait! Picking up right where the Marvel line left off in 1994! And it's written by Larry Hama, the original writer! *dies*

Incidentally, I emailed this to my comic guy tonight:

Oh, and it's obvious that I want G.I. Joe #156 when it comes out, right? *grin*

A short while later, I got this response.

Larry who? But of course!

I laughed my ass off. Yeah, my comics guy knows me. It's funny, sometimes, how one can measure their life.

And what a measure it is, too. )

So, I went to see Ironman 2 tonight (damn enjoyable, but 1>2, as per usual). As I was leaving the theater (stay til the end, folks!), I heard a guy describing The Avengers to someone. I looked at the source of the voice. It was a thirty-something guy talking to a buddy in a Green Lantern shirt. (Thus the explanation - he's obviously a DC guy.) I loved that. But even better was their friend, who was modeling a G.I. Joe t-shirt. I caught his eye and gave him a quiet "nice shirt" on my way by. He nodded and mouthed a "thanks." Ah, so nice to be amongst one's own. Peace. Love. Fandom.
