I recently bought some new running shoes. I went to a lovely local business where a nice man named Javier fit me personally and exemplified wonderful customer service. In conversing with him, I thought about something I hadn't in a long time.

You Made a Thing. They Made a Comment.
May. 4th, 2013 02:11 amIf you create at all; if you've ever been flamed at all; go read this from Wil Wheaton. Now.
The tl;dr?
"This is an important thing to keep in mind, for all creative people in the universe: the very act of creating is courageous. Making art requires empathy and a willingness to be vulnerable and naked before the world. Doing these things on the Internet means you’re exposing yourself to the very best and the very worst our species has to offer. Just remember, when someone is being a terrible monstrous awful cruel human being: you made a thing, and they made a comment."

Also, "Don't ever let anyone tell you you can't love that, that's for boys. You have to love this because you're a girl. You find the things that you love, and you love them the most that you can."
Oh, Wil Wheaton, you eloquent, magnificent bastard. Thank you for this. And thanks to Jennifer Black for sharing.

Book Recommendation
Jan. 27th, 2012 11:41 pmIf light of all the SOPA and PIPA and ACTA talk going around lately, I'm reminded of a book I really enjoyed.
Cory Doctorow's Little Brother.
If you haven't read it and enjoy spy thriller type novels with a more than a touch of anti-big-government messages and technophile sensibilities, I think you might like it, too. And as with all things Doctorow, it's available for free via a Creative Commons license here.
I recently read Ready Player One, by Ernest Kline, and that one was a winner, too. In that book, Cory Doctorow and Wil Wheaton are elected President and Vice-President of the Internet because of their long-standing fight for privacy rights online. This is a work of fiction, but the point is well made. Maybe one day...

Presented without further comment.
Okay. A little comment-never thought I'd see the day, with PAX conflicting ah, that explains it. PAX is not over Labor Day weekend this year. Thanks, PAX! And with Paul and Storm and JoCo coming, too?!?
Looks like a w00tstock will be in town!!!

You, Sir, Have a Theme Song
Jun. 1st, 2010 10:17 pmI knew it would happen, but seeing it on YouTube still filled me with glee. GLEE, I tell you.
Presenting Wil Wheaton singing Livin' On A Prayer from Phoenix Comicon 2010.
*cue the fangirl squee*
(And yes, he sang this last year, too. Let's hope it becomes a tradition.)

I Live in the Future
Mar. 30th, 2010 09:28 pmI just watched Wil Wheaton's keynote address from last Friday at PAX East on YouTube.
On my television.
Cool.
And well worth the hour. Go here if you'd like to get inspired to make something, too. I could list out my personal highlights, but frankly we don't have time for that. Suffice to say that my not-as-into-Wil-Wheaton-or-general-geekiness-as-I-am husband had this to say when we (yes, he watched it all the way through with me) were done:
"He's brilliant."

Yep. That about sums it up.
Wil's speech inspired me. I clapped wildly and laughed out loud and at some parts, I think I got something in my eye.
Brilliant, indeed.
