Once you eliminate the impossible...

...whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth.
And that improbability is that I loved Star Trek a second time!
Not only that, I have re-ordered my list, at least for tonight: Undiscovered Country > 2009 > Kahn > Insurrection > First Contact >> Nemesis >>> Voyage Home > Generations > Search for Spock > Final Frontier > The Motion Picture.
Seriously, this movie is made of win and that is really all there is to say.
They didn't get me the first time, but this time the end credits nearly made me cry, and everything held up flawlessly and I just may have to go see this yet again. I'm not one for doing that, but...it's just that enjoyable of a movie.
I didn't watch ST: TNG when it first came out because I thought there was no way you could replace Captain Kirk and have Star Trek still be Star Trek. You know what? I was wrong. TNG is a damn fine show. I had serious misgivings about this film because I thought a pseudo-prequel just wouldn't work and I thought it looked entirely too 90210 to be any kind of decent. Know what? Wrong again.
This movie makes me want to reread every Star Trek novel I've ever read (a long list) and read every one I've ever missed (a short list). It makes me want to have Star Trek movie marathons and sit and watch the series for days on end. It makes me proud and happy and entirely full of squee at my Trekkie status. In short, it works, it's fabulous, and I fucking love it.
Live long and prosper.
That is all.
This cut is essentially spoiler-free, but be warned of a dirty word or two and some serious squee!

Date: May. 12th, 2009 01:19 am (UTC)It deserves a second viewing to catch the references and to form a valid opinion other than ZOMG!

Date: May. 12th, 2009 01:18 am (UTC)The last movie I saw multiple times in the theater was Revenge of the Sith. And it was great because on my second viewing (which occurred very shortly after the first and was still in a packed house) a guy behind me whispered "no fucking way" when Anakin killed the younglings. It added so much to my movie experience to get his initial reaction whilst I knew that "yes fucking way" was coming.
That is my one nod to the prequels for Lucas. He didn't wimp out there. And while I will lament the prequels all day long, Sith is certainly the best of the bunch, and it has some redeeming qualities.
Back to Trek, OMG yes the catchphrases.
This film has exceeded all of my expectations.
I'm loving it!

Date: May. 12th, 2009 02:33 am (UTC)Attack of the Cheesy Dialogue I will probably never watch again unless it's with a group and that's the vote.
Oh! Your post was about Star Trek, sorry.
Yeah... I'm probably going for a third helping of awesomeness next week sometime when I visit my friends in SC.

Sigh...
I can watch Clones if I have to, but I don't think I've seen Menace really since it came out. Have it, of course, but I think I could burn it (ala Simon Pegg in Spaced) without much remorse.
Then again, Ray Park...hm...he does have a lovely butterfly kick...yes, Darth Maul might be worthwhile...hm...perhaps I will keep it after all.

um. Yeah. So that's all I have to say about that.

That said, I really enjoyed the crud out of this ST movie, and I realize some think the um, spoilerfree, um, "plot device" they used was a cop-out. No, no. It was the only way they could reconcile both visions without calling one shlocky or better etc. They are what they are- two imaginings of the same essential universe and characters, through the eyes of two different moments in time, about 40 years apart (in real time).

Holy CRAP, dude!
The PhantomVersary is in a week! (5.19.99-09!)
*okay, so there are more redeeming things about Menace, Horatio, than are dreamt of in my memory*

Date: May. 13th, 2009 02:29 am (UTC)Guiness on tap, Duvel, Chimay, Spaten (anything), Paulaner (anything), Maredsous, etc, etc. So *definitely* did not have Romulan Ale. Damn shame. I was drinkin' Shiner. Which is close, I think. (Who are we kidding; he Romulans probably drink Bud ;) *snort*)
I really wanted Guiness, just in homage to Mr. Paulie. ;)
