: Written for the random word prompt of “copper.”

-----

Patrick had kept it all these years.

He had no idea why. He wasn’t generally the sentimental type. No, despite all superficial evidence to the contrary, that was David.

But here he was, fiddling with the penny he carried in his pocket most every day.

It was a nervous habit, which made sense since he’d found the penny on what was arguably one of the most anxious days of his life. He’d picked it up for luck, then regretted it, as it only seemed to bring the bad kind his way - at least at first.

But that hike had turned out alright in the end, so he’d changed his mind. And he’d kept the penny. Going on seven years now.

Which brought him to his current dilemma.

He and David had an anniversary coming up. And while he’d never put much stock in the rules about such things, he had no ideas for a gift, so he’d googled it.

And there it was.

The traditional seventh anniversary gifts were copper and wool.

He didn’t have a sheep. And David had quite enough sweaters. So, copper it was.

Copper.

Patrick pulled the coin from his pocket and flipped it over a few times, squinting at it.

And then he smiled.

——

David’s smile was confused at first. Until he read the inscription included in the frame.

Then it grew wider, and he blinked back a few tears.

He looked up at Patrick.

“This is lovely,” he said.

Patrick chuckled. “Even the frame?”

David laughed. “Especially the frame.”

He set it aside then, and kissed Patrick gently.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Ready for dinner?”

“God, yes. I’m starving.”

Patrick laughed.

“Well, come on, then. Reservations are in fifteen minutes.”

And so the gift was left on the couch as they left the house.

It was out of sight, but not out of mind.

Because halfway through dessert, David suddenly put down his fork.

“Really?” he asked.

Patrick blinked in confusion.

“Really what?”

David blinked too, but his expression was entirely different. He had a slight sheen of tears in his eyes.

“David?” asked Patrick, concerned.

“Lucky?”

It took Patrick a second, but then he got it. The softest of smiles took over his face.

“The luckiest,” he said.

David smiled back as he blinked back more tears.

“Find a penny, pick it up,” he mumbled.

Patrick reached over and took David’s hand. Then he spoke clearly, no mumbling involved.

“And all my life, I’ll have good luck.”

He accented his one word modification of the old rhyme, and David laughed through his tears.

Patrick leaned across the table and lightly kissed David on the nose.

Then he settled back into his chair and gestured at David’s plate.

“Now that that’s cleared up, eat your dessert and let’s go home.”

David did as he was told.

Then he and Patrick did, in fact, go home.

Home to a place filled with thousands of memories.

And a penny that no longer resided in Patrick’s pocket. A penny he’d found just before what was arguably the worst hike of his life, on what was unquestionably the luckiest day of his life.

A penny that proclaimed that luck publicly, right there in its frame, for everyone to see. Everyone, up to and including and most importantly, David.

And Patrick wouldn’t have had it any other way.

-----

A/N: I realize Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian town*. As such, I know that the penny has been discontinued for some time there. However, I also know they’re still around. And I took liberties with pennies being good luck in Canada, as they are in the UK and the US. I don’t know this for sure, but I figured it was a safe bet, and if not, I’ll just claim another use of the artistic license I got in that Cracker Jack box when I was seven. Or, you know, American influence on both Patrick and David.  Oh, and for those not familiar, the rhyme is: Find a penny, pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck.

*Do we actually know this in canon? I’m not sure. I know it was left vague intentionally. Sure, filming is in Canada, but show setting? Again, not sure. For that matter, while David and the Roses are presumed American due to previous life in New York, etc, are they? Is Patrick Canadian? Do we know? I didn’t dig too deeply into this, as work was busy today and I needed to get this written, but I couldn’t find info on this. Again, I think vague on purpose? Regardless, for the purposes of this fic, it doesn’t really matter. Artistic license. ;)
