Hugh was nearly asleep when he felt it. But he was still awake enough to turn into the caress, enjoying the lightest brush of fur over his cheek.
He smiled too, as he slowly regained more consciousness, but he didn’t open his eyes. He knew better. Because previous experience told him that if he opened his eyes, the spell would be broken. The song would stop.
And Hugh didn’t want Ricky to stop singing to him. It was so rare for a bear to sing, after all.
It was even more rare for that bear to carry a near perfect pitch.
And it was exceedingly rare indeed for a bear to so perfectly mimic a human voice.
And so Hugh kept his eyes closed until Ricky finished his song. Then he opened them just enough to kiss Paul’s cheek before sighing in content and settling down next to him.
“That was lovely,” he said. “Thank you, Paul.”
Paul smirked as he snuggled into Hugh’s shoulder.
“Don’t thank me. It was all Ricky’s idea,” Paul said, setting the bear aside on the nightstand.
“Uh huh,” mumbled Hugh, yawning. “Whatever you say. Good night, love.”
“Good night,” answered Paul.
A moment later, Paul dozed off.
Hugh would soon follow Paul to dreamland, but before he did, he sighed again.
This sigh was as content as the first, but it was also fondly exasperated.
One day (or more likely, one night), Hugh would get it through Paul’s thick skull that he was not the terrible singer he thought he was. That all evidence pointed to another conclusion entirely.
That he had no reason to hide behind a stuffed toy when he wanted to sing Hugh to sleep.
But tonight wasn’t that night.
Tonight, Hugh smiled, tucked himself firmly against Paul’s chest, and slept.
