Summary: Sometimes, it’s okay for a doctor to break the rules. They just better have a good reason.

The doctor had never seen Cardassian water sickness in a person this old.

But these people came from a time long before the disease existed. Like the population of an isolated planet, they’d never been exposed to it. So they had no immunity to it.

Still, there was an inoculation. It was a rare disease now days, even in young patients. How Starfleet – even in its current, anemic form – had neglected to vaccinate these people was in his opinion an egregious oversight.

But none of that mattered now.

Now, he just needed to treat his colleague, somehow one of the last to fall ill – preferably in such a way as to get him out of sickbay before the pale man in recovery drove everyone crazy with his demands for updates.

And so he treated this very adult man just as he would a child.

He pumped him full of drugs.

Then he tucked his teddy bear under his arm.

As he did, he chuckled. Technically, even though it could be sterilized, the bear wasn’t allowed.

But he was a pediatrician. He treated childhood illnesses. He let comfort objects slide all the time.

Besides, you try telling that to Paul Stamets.
