Note: Another Ricky story, because I just can’t help myself.

-----

Paul’s voice is slightly slurred, but given the situation, it’s not noticed.

“And then,” he drawls, “Hugh walks right up to the Tellarite and tells him to shove it.”

“And you can imagine how that went over. Next thing I know, Hugh grabs my hand and we’re outside the club.”

Paul’s eyes grow soft and wet then, but his audience doesn’t interrupt when it takes him a minute to continue.

“He kissed me. Against the wall. The brick was rough. I could hear the music under the yells and fighting coming from inside.”

Paul takes a long pull from the glass in his hand, then chuckles before going on.

“Then the door burst open and the Tellarite came barreling through with two buddies, and there was no more kissing. There was only running.”

“We made it back to our hotel, somehow. Hugh laughed so much. It was.... well, it was a good night.”

Paul holds his hand up as if making an oath. “I know. It doesn’t seem like Hugh. Well, not the Hugh most people knew, anyway. But it’s true.”

Paul trails off, wistful, then chuckles again. “Oh, his grandmother laughed so hard when I told her. She made me tell all the cousins later. Hugh hated that, but she said it was a story that ‘bears repeating’.”

"So here I am. Repeating it to you, wishing he was here to hate it.”

Paul’s quiet for a moment, sniffling. Then he perks up, looking directly at his audience.

“You believe me, don’t you? You can see how perfect, professional Hugh had a rowdy side? One that nearly got us killed in a misguided attempt to defend my honor?”

Non-judgmental, black, button eyes stare back at him, and as Paul falls into a drunken sleep, he knows that Ricky does.
