It was rare that Hugh took anyone other than Paul to bed with him.
But when he did, Paul knew it was for a good reason: A stressful day, a surgery gone wrong, an annoying coworker, or, yes, sometimes even a fight with Paul.
So Paul couldn’t really blame him. He understood.
He rarely knew the exact reason why Hugh did it, though, and today was no exception.
But when Paul found Hugh fast asleep in bed with an unusual companion, he barely reacted.
“Aw, okay,” he mumbled. Then he merely turned on his heel and left the room.
A moment later, he settled on the couch with a PADD, planning to read for a while since it was far earlier than his usual bedtime (and Hugh’s, too, for that matter – but early slumber often went along with this behavior in Paul’s experience). He ended up falling asleep there, but Hugh didn’t take that any more personally than Paul did Hugh’s actions.
In the morning, they talked.
Hugh explained why he’d done what he did, and Paul listened sympathetically.
Then Paul made the bed while Hugh made breakfast.
They ate in companionable silence. The night was forgotten.
That is, until Paul winced as he stretched his neck.
Because while both Paul and Hugh were done with the previous night, it wasn’t done with them. Hugh was well-rested, but Paul was sore from sleeping on the couch.
So it was only logical that Hugh offered to massage the offending muscle, and that Paul took him up on his offer. And that therefore, the bed was completely unmade a short time later.
But before any of that, Hugh was sure to put Ricky back on his shelf.
Good thing, too, because Paul’s work wasn’t the only thing completely undone.
So was Paul.
