Time Frame: Season Two. After the gate, before the dance.
Spoilers: Stranger Things, Season Two.
Summary: It was a practical gift. But if it served another purpose, who was he to argue?

He wasn’t sure what made him do it.
It’s not like she would’ve known the difference.
But he would’ve, he supposed, and that was the kicker.
That, and the pesky fact that he just wanted to.
So here he was, eyeballing baubles and bracelets like the well and truly out-of-practice man he was.
He had no idea what was “hip” these days, and once again he wished he wasn’t so clueless.
But then he saw it, and he smiled.
It was small and delicate, but served a vital function.
It was perfect.
It was a bit more than he wanted to pay, though, and the clerk kept giving him weird looks, so he almost left without it. He didn’t feel like feeding the rumor mill any more than he already had.
So he hovered and hesitated for a long moment before snatching it up and walking to the register.
To hell with it, he thought. Let ‘em talk.
After all, if they were looking for a gift to show up on Joyce’s wrist (it wasn’t like that – really), they might miss the new girl with the new watch at the dance.
And that was more than fine with Jim Hopper.
