I Got You a Present
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Rated: G
Category: Double Drabble. Gen.
Season: Any, but likely early.
Spoilers: None.
Summary: What’s the use in having a kid around if you can’t buy them what you’ve always wanted?
Disclaimer: Just playing in the gateroom. Don’t mind me.

I always wanted one of these as a kid.
Sure, it’s cliché, and odds are I wouldn’t have actually played with it that much once the newness wore off, but that didn’t stop me wanting one.
Looking at this one now, I can’t stop that little bit of longing coming back, and I’m tempted to buy it for myself. But I shouldn’t. It’d be silly. When would I actually use it?
With my schedule and not even being on the planet half the time, I simply can’t justify it.
Still, I’m tempted. It’s gorgeous. The detail is amazing.
I pick it up to get a closer look when suddenly my cell phone rings.
I jump a little, then fish my phone out of my pocket. The name on the screen makes me grin.
A few minutes of talking later, I hang up and promptly head for the checkout line, decision made.
Because, really, what good is being an adult with an adopted niece if you can’t buy her the things you always wanted but she never asked for?
That’s a rite of childhood. It’s at least as important as owning a dog.
Good timing, Cassie.
I hope you like trains.

Note: Written for the self prompt of “train,” thanks to watching While You Were Sleeping.

Author's Note: I started December with the intent to do another advent of fic, but it just didn't turn out that way. I did write a handful of holiday fic, though, so here we are. :)

Date: Dec. 28th, 2013 02:24 pm (UTC)I did, in fact, guess early on that it was Sam -- mostly because "It would be sooo great if this was Sam, I hope it is!!" And it was.

Funny. You're the first one who called Sam here. Others have assumed a certain Colonel. And I'm not saying. ;)

Date: Dec. 29th, 2013 04:19 am (UTC)Okay, I feel pretty absurd now . . . I had to re-read it to realize that yes, it is ambiguous. It can be any member of the team who would regard Cassie as a niece. My mind probably jumped to Sam because I so wanted it to be her -- largely because it inverts the trope so nicely.

And, um, though I said I wasn't saying, I did choose my icon for my response to your comment on purpose...and I have been known to slightly ship Jack/Janet, so those two being siblings doesn't fit quite as well as another member of SG-1...just saying...
Love you!
