This is What a Geek Looks Like
Mar. 9th, 2012 02:58 pmThink Geek recently tweeted a link to this blog, a study in what scientists actually look like, and I absolutely adore it. I am thinking of submitting a photo, in fact. But for now, I share this one with you.
Because this is what a geek looks like.

Me, circa 2004, in one of my favorite photos ever. Yes, I was a practicing veterinarian completely obsessed with Stargate SG-1 at this time. But fear not, if I submit to the blog, I'll do so using a pic from when I was an actual scientist. You know, when I chopped up DNA full time and did this part time. *grin*

Date: May. 23rd, 2013 06:03 pm (UTC)And I stopped using the term "jock" years ago. I prefer "sports geek," because like a "Star Wars geek" or "comics geek," they are just a subset of geek.
A geek is someone who is passionate about their fandom. They go above and beyond a "fan" because of their passion. A Star Trek fan watches the show. A geek cosplays their favorite character at a con. A football fan watches the games. A football geek paints their face and goes to the games in crazy outfits.
Same exact thing.
There is no difference between knowing the title of every episode of Star Trek and being able to name the starting quarterbacks for every Super Bowl. Both sets of knowledge show off how much of a geek the person possessing it is. They're passions are just in two different areas.
It's like Paul McGillion said, "Some people watch basketball, some watch football. You guys watch sci-fi." Yup. And none are any better than the others. And some of us do both. ;)
