Ah, The X-Files, that be all and end all of internet fandom, as they say. My introduction to fanfic (I'd read some Trek 'zines, but not really) and frankly, the entire internet. Remember? No one had it then. I was in college, and I'd hide out in the chemistry lab study room at the only computer in the building that had net access. I'd abuse my TA powers (it was a locked room - regular students couldn't use it most of the time) to print out terrible scans of magazine covers and pages of fic. Sigh...good times. Speaking of, remember that it's almost December, which means it will soon be time for December Lady's annual advent calendar. *squee* Come play, or at least enjoy!

Note: I unpacked the box containing this tape, and many others just like it, today by pure coincidence. But when I realized it was November 21, well...I had to share. Yes, I've since replaced my tapes with DVDs, and I'm most likely to watch TXF on Netflix Streaming these days, but I just can't part with these just yet. Soon, I think, but not just yet.
* And yes, I realize many of you were, but the line is too fun to pass up.

Good times. The very first music video I saw was for The X-Files. It was a shortened version of, "Lean on Me" and it changed my life!

Exactly. Though I don't recall seeing any vids (I don't think they existed back then like we know them now - and you are younger than me [which is so odd for my mum, but whatever] so you might have had a different experience?) in my early internet days, I remember well the pathetic excuses we had for chat and forums and I did use those! The Church of the Enigmatic Saint Scully, the DDEB (David Duchovny Estrogen Brigade), and fanfic was good times! TXF fandom changed my life in that it brought me fanfic and fan interaction in a way that Trek never could, simply because of the internet. That's why no one argues its status as the granddaddy of it all. TXF was the first show that benefited from home internet use, and it changed EVERYTHING. For EVERYBODY.

How's that for a conspiracy theory? ;)

I don't write TXF. I don't know why. I just don't. My only foray into that fandom as a writer is the whacked-out Dr. Horrible crossover, "Real Villains Wear Pink." Now, I'm actually quite fond of that insanity, but it still doesn't make me want to write XF fic. I read it, but I don't write it. *shrug*

I had about a dozen tapes like that with Star Trek: TNG on them. And TNG was the first fanfic I ever found, but X-Files fanfic was certainly a close second. It was the late 90s, and I had discovered USENET. LOL XD

TNG would probably have been mine except that I fell HARD for TXF in college and had eyes for nothing else for a while. Not even my old friend Star Trek. But fear not, I came back. There's always a special place in your heart for your first fandom, even if it didn't benefit from the internet boom. ;)
