I know my son.
And I know that look.
It’s the look he gets when he’s about to do something impetuous and usually insane. It only takes me a second to realize the action he has in mind this time.
He’s going to kiss her.
Right here and now, he’s finally going to do it.
And though I’ve known her for a lot less time, I’m certain how she’ll react if he does.
She’ll say it was just the situation.
She’ll chalk it up to nerves and say it didn’t mean anything.
And curse that boy, he’ll go along with it.
So now’s not the time.
I can’t actually protest, but I have to speak up to try to break the spell between them.
“He’s not the only one here, you know.”
It works, and as I see disappointment flash across his face, I can’t help but smile inwardly - because I know I’m right.
This isn’t my first rodeo, Richard. After all, if you’d bought every action figure you wanted as a child, you’d have never had enough money for that Millennium Falcon.
And wasn’t that just so much better in the end?
Trust me, kiddo. You’ll thank me later.
