jackwabbit: (Mac-Downcast)

On Saturday night, couch-ridden with a cold, I finally watched Avatar. You know, Dances With Wolves in space. I liked it. It wasn't OMGAWESOME or anything, but it was decent. It led to a conversation about Dances With Wolves and that, in turn, led to me singing high praises for its soundtrack, which remains one of the most powerful pieces I've had the pleasure to hear. The buffalo slaughter scene cannot be heard without chills and tears to this day. You don't need the film to know something horrendous has happened. A year of my life shared this soundtrack, on a hand-made tape given to me by a friend. Today, we lost that soundtrack's creator. Music is sad.

Rest in Peace, John Barry. I hope the music plays on, wherever you are.

And the rest of you?

I barely remember the movie. Minus a few parts. It was alright. Very pretty, but not a fave. The score, though? Breathtaking! Absolutely breathtaking!

As for Avatar, I have long since realized that there is nothing new under the sun. No matter how original one thinks they are, it's been done. So, the plot "remake" didn't faze me. Meh. Whatever. I thought they did a decent job of that particular tale. The effects, though, were pretty. I'm glad I didn't see it on the big screen, though. I intentionally avoided it. I have one friend who vomited in the theater and another who barely made it to the bathroom when watching Avatar. That would have so been me. It's hard enough to watch a normal movie without getting a massive headache. One like that? Oh, man. I can feel the nausea and the stabbing pain behind my eyes even now.
