Okay, so you've probably heard about the crazies with Westboro Baptist Church protesting San Diego Comicon. And maybe you've heard about the Twitter campaign #godlovesbatman designed to completely ignore the protesters and instead donate whatever you can per minute of protest to AIDS research. (Here's one fine example of that from Matt Fraction, writer of Invincible Iron Man.) Anyway, these guys clearly missed the #godlovesbatman ignoring part, but still triumphed over WBC and their completely ridiculous hatemongering in every other way.

More pics here. This one and the "ODIN IS GOD - READ THE MIGHTY THOR #5" are my faves.

OMGOMGOMG I'm falling off my chair! Pure win!!! Counter-protests mostly just make the bastards feel special, but counter-protests that make them look ridiculous is a very sweet revenge indeed.

Check out the guy who's been doing the Phelps-a-thons -- this is his third! Each time, he sends Fred Phelps a thank-you card telling him how much money he helped raise. I love it!

Exactly.

I'm all for it. WBC is the most ridiculous thing ever. I mean, they are just plain ridiculous. There is no other word for them. Except, perhaps, for inconceivable.

(Or whatever dessert they choose!)

This is great! I especially love the donation to aids part! One things those idiots cannot combat (or understand) is love, charity, and wit!!

Faith, hope, and love...but the greatest of these is love.

They. Do. Not. Get. It.

Granted, perhaps they are very Old Testament God, but really, um, the New Testament is, well, the current edition, so to speak. God sent Jesus so we didn't have to hate and could love everyone...I mean, if you're into that, at least be consistent with your own canon. I mean really.

Yeah...a very religious upbringing helps when arguing with morons.

People use the bible as "evidence" for practically anything. This is why I have a problem with people basing their entire existence on one book. And how many times has the book been translated over the centuries??? It doesn't make sense but sense is not something these people have an abundance of.

I knew someone who believed the bible talked about UFOs.

Understood. What I enjoy about religious debate (note that I didn't say spiritual debate, which is entirely different) is that I do know a lot about the Bible. I've read it start to finish, and I can quote whole sections of it. I was raised conservatively (though not insanely so) and competed in Bible trivia contests all over the country (no, really) because I was super competitive and have a good memory. I have trophies and everything, despite the fact that even then I didn't really believe it. (I was too skeptical, even at five years old in Sunday School, to not ask 'How long is a day to God?' and 'Why does God care how I dress?' and 'What about the dinosaurs?' No one ever answered these questions to my satisfaction, so...yeah, not so much.)

Thus, I just smile and nod and smile and nod.

But yes, even if you believe that the Bible is God's Holy Word and all that (I don't), anyone with half a brain can understand that it has been altered many, many times, even within my short lifetime. Over many centuries, choosing things like the word "love" above instead of "charity," as is the case between the NIV and King James versions of the current Bible, become amplified exponentially, and things change.

Period.

Not to mention, King James was a misogynist pig, so...

Yeah.

I went to an evangelical high school. As you can see, it didn't take. :)

I tried rereading the bible but the part in genesis where we learn how old everybody is lost me. How can people believe that bible folks lived to be 800-900 years old? Seriously?? And, don't get me started on Noah's ark.

I made it because I earned merit badges for it in Missionettes (like Girl Scouts, but with church - *shudder*). Like I said, I was very competitive. Make it a contest to read a seriously old census report (Numbers) that makes you want to claw your eyes out? No problem. I didn't believe it one whit and it did not influence my behavior in any way (I think I broke nearly all the commandments before I hit ten), but I read it.

I like the ones that have nothing to do with nothing, like "Is this thing on?" and "Magnets, how the *?*! do they work?"

Ok, so I just looked up the Wiki article on the Westboro Baptist Church. Most of the funerals that they protested made a lot of sense for a bunch of bigots, like Correta Scott King (may she rest in peace). But, Mr. Rogers' funeral? What?????? How can you hate Mr. Rogers?! Now, that's crazy!!!

Maybe they believe the whole sniper thing?

Honestly, they're just complete psychos.

Me, too! But I really like the Odin one and the Trekkie protesting Star Wars.
