Oh, WTF...once again, monkey see, monkey do.

I blame lothi, the human-spider hybrid, and LPFF, the radiation source, for this one.

You know, it's funny. Even though I typed that purely for humor/because of the warning, it was still odd to type. I often curse like a sailor verbally, but in writing-not so much, and only when it's required (I don't think Jack O'Neill says things like 'oh, darn, I'm about to be captured by the Goa'uld again', for example...) and that was odd...

But I slapped a warning up top, so it's all good!

LOL . . . in "Up a Long Ladder", I had some characters who swore incessantly, some who swore occasionally, some who swore only under intense provocation, and Mac, of course, who didn't swear at all (he didn't get sufficiently provoked himself) and found the swearing tiresome. It all depended on the characters' voices.

Presumably your writing voice is different from your speaking voice. I know mine is.

I hope that my writing voice, in stories, is the character's voice. When it's actually me 'speaking', as it is now, it's still different than my oral voice-you're right.

I once had Mac swear in a fic.

It was hard to do, and I agonized over it, but I truly thought that he might in that scene-loth did agree, which helped...he was, in fact, sufficiently provoked.

I do not hold to the 'Mac is perfect' school of thought.

I hold to the 'Mac is human' line of thinking.

Yes, I remember that fic -- and I thought you nailed it: it was the level of provocation that would be necessary, and it was the level of language that rang true. (Now that I think of it, I didn't even know you at the time that I read it.)

At any rate, it worked for me then, and it works for me now.

And in all of the fics of yourse that I've read so far, the characters speak with their own voices, and you as a writer speak with yours, which is different from your 'journaling' voice, although I've occasionally noticed stylistic echoes of the former in the latter.

As far as the gimme-a-break-Mac-is-human business goes . . . ah, well. The "Director's Cut" version of "Phoenix Rising" actually included my first attempt at a sex scene. (Lothi gave that one a thumb's-up too.) I think he'd be a crashing bore if he were perfect.

Voices: Aw, you're makin' me blush...thanks.

Human Mac: PREACH IT!

Sex Scenes: I find them extrememly difficult to write.

"Difficult" -- no freaking kidding, man! Scary-difficult. Even though I had no difficulty with it as being absolutely consistent with the character, it was still one of the hardest writing challenges I've undertaken so far. That's actually why I made myself do it.

I tend to 'skip down a bit, brother' and do implication rather than spelling it out at this point, as it hasn't been absolutely necessary to write one out yet per se, but one day I will have to do it, I'm sure.

And I completely agree that Mac and sex scenes are completely in character, but the writing is beyond difficult!
