Oh, Wil, Wil....I wonder why I bother to have thoughts sometimes. They've already been thunk ;)
So, that was my biggest AMEN (aside from "ET with walkie talkies") was that this was the best way to acknowledge the relevance of the pre-existing universe and still have license to play and explore in new ways. For anyone that thinks it is a cop-out, they just don't get how horribly fractured and disenfranchised (literally) the fandom would have felt if there'd been a "your Trek didn't happen and we're just rolling our tank over its memory".
