Kathryn Janeway had never been a parent.
The closest she'd come was the childlike adult that was Seven.
Naomi and Icheb and the other actual children on Voyager had been more like grandchildren. Hers for a time, but ultimately someone else's responsibility.
But this crew, they were different.
They were so much younger (some more than others, as Rok-Tahk's very existence often reminded her).
And they were hers.
Not biologically, obviously, but hers nonetheless in every way that counted.
And today, as she dealt with yet another kerfuffle, she chuckled.
Because her parents had been right.
Kids were an adventure.
