Summary: Patrick once gave David a life-changing birthday gift. And turnabout is fair play, right?
Note: Written for the random word prompt of “leash.”

Patrick opened the perfectly wrapped box carefully.
“Oh, just tear it open!” said David, impatient.
Patrick chuckled and tore the paper. Then he opened the box to reveal a long, leather strap with a clip on one end and a loop on the other. His brow furrowed in confusion.
“David, what is this?”
“It’s a leash.”
“I can see that. What’s it for?”
Patrick looked nervous.
David waved a hand at Patrick dismissively.
“I’m not going to let you walk our dog on a dingy piece of canvas.”
Patrick didn’t appear to be listening. He turned the leash over, admiring the quality of the material.
“This must have cost a fortune.”
“I’ll have you know it’s from the best thrift shop in East Village.”
“You went to a thrift shop?”
David held up a finger. “A thrift shop in New York.”
Patrick conceded the difference between that and a local thrift store with a gesture.
“When you visited Alexis? Last month?”
David nodded.
“And you kept it secret all this time?”
“I can keep a secret,” said David.
Patrick gave David a disbelieving look.
Then he scooted down from his end of the couch and climbed onto David’s lap.
“That must have been excruciating. I’m proud of you.”
“It was very difficult,” said David, sighing dramatically.
“Good job,” said Patrick, kissing David lightly.
Then he pulled back.
“Now,” he murmured, “You said something about ‘our dog’?”
David smiled.
“We can go to the shelter on Monday.”
Patrick’s face lit up.
“Really?”
David nodded.
“Happy birthday, Patrick.”
The kiss Patrick gave David would’ve been enough to ensure that all on its own.
But getting a dog?
And not a rarefied designer dog from a breeder, but a who-knows-what from the shelter?
Patrick kissed David until he couldn’t breathe.
Happy birthday indeed.

A/N: This is a sequel of sorts to “Patterns,” especially the last line of that story. I’m honestly torn as to whether I truly see these two with a dog. And I’m torn as to who would actually want one more. Patrick is the easy choice, with hiking and canon parental leanings and all, but David, while he’d never admit it, likes cute things and companionship and understands what is means to be unwanted, so… But anyway, it’s creative license regardless, and this was too much fun to pass up, so here we are. Seriously, the random word generator gave me “leash.” What.
