“David?”

“Yeah?”

“Is your mother actually British?”

“No. I thought you knew that.”

“Well, I thought I did. But…”

“But, what?”

“I heard her say ‘aluminium’ today.”

“Oh, that’s just the rule.”

“What rule?”

“The Moira Rose Rule of Polysyllabic Preference.”

“Excuse me?”

“Also known as the Rule of  Monosyllabic Limitation.”

“Again, excuse me?”

“Everything must be expressed using as many syllables as possible, with single syllable words reserved only for emergencies.”

“That… makes a strange amount of sense.”

“It did to me when I made it up.”

“How old were you?”

“Seven? Eight? Whenever you learn about syllables?”

“That’s adorable.”

“It’s adorable that my mother has always talked like a crazy person?”

“No, it’s adorable that you gave it a name as a kid.”

“Alexis always liked it. I guess it is kind of cute.”

“Nope. Not cute.”

“What?”

“Endearing, charming, and delightful maybe, but not cute.”

“I know what you’re doing.”

“Elaborate?”

“You’re not going to stop, are you?”

“Negative.”

“Not even if I do this?”

David kissed Patrick then, long and hard. When he was through, he smirked.

“Well, what do you think about that, smarty-pants?”

Patrick smirked back.

“Exquisite.”

David laughed.

Then he kissed him again.
