Hugh knew Ricky wasn’t alive.

Not in the literal sense of the word.

Still, it was difficult to believe the bear didn’t have a circulatory system.

Because even all of his medical training had a hard time arguing with the heartbeat he could so clearly hear through the bear’s little body.

The fact that said body was cushioning Hugh’s head as it laid on Paul’s chest might have had something to do with that, but Hugh didn’t care.

He felt more alive just then than he had in a while.

And as far as he was concerned, Ricky did too.
