This was something Paul couldn’t help with.

And Tracy’s sympathetic looks, while appreciated and understood and reciprocated when that was called for, only went so far.

And so Hugh sat, alone in the living room, as his mind turned over the day’s events again and again.

Or rather, he was almost alone – but not quite.

Because as he tried (and failed) yet again to see his way past his mistake, he idly stroked the nearly hairless ear of his oldest friend.

And eventually, when Hugh’s brain finally gave in to his body and he slept, Ricky would still be there.
