Shitty of Glen to see it w/o you, and agreed on his fan levels.
However, I did not love this movie as a hero movie fan (though the preview for Wolverine didn't hurt my opinion of it one bit-yes, though the world is saturated w/ Logan, I could never, ever get enough). It was just plain made of awesome. Having not read the book, it's hard for me to comment on the adaptation, but as a film I loved it.
I didn't even notice the effects (meaning for me they weren't overdone), and I never noticed the length, either.
As for people not liking it, I know some fans who are bitching about 'they left this out' or 'they changed that', but that's to be expected. Otherwise, most seem to like it. Those that don't, I think, simply don't get it.
You do have to get it to get it, you know?
As you say, Ironman or Spiderman it is not.
I am about halfway through the book now, and for the first time in a long time, I want to go pay good money to see the movie again.
