Perfection
Dec. 31st, 2008 07:00 pmThe Vanderbilt Commodores just beat the Eagles of Boston College 16-14 in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl. Now, don't get me started on college football and bowl games and how asinine it/they is/are (most of you thought I only watched sci-fi, huh?), BUT I want to say just one thing.
First, though, you need a bit of history, courtesy of Wiki. See, the Commodores haven't won a bowl game since 1955, and that victory is their only bowl win EVER. They were only 6-6 this year after a stellar 5-0 start. Yes, they lost 6 of their past 7 games. Since 1950, the Commodores have won only 32% of their games. They have only appeared in 4 bowl games ever, and they have not had a winning (above 500) season since 1975. They are a team that has struggled mightily for half a century...a team that has been trod upon and called names in the press for the past two months...a team with nothing to lose and little to gain. But tonight, that team won a football game by playing perfect football. They won a game in which they did not turn the ball over and were not penalized.
It's true. No flags were thrown on the Commodores, and they held the ball.
That, my friends, is how you win a football game.
Even after 53 years. Go Commodores.
