I don't hate much of anything, but I do hate fear. And do you know what I hate even more?

People who allow it to rule their lives and insist that I do the same.

People who try to make me afraid.

People who try to make everyone afraid.

People who say:

Don't support the new health care bill because someone will kill grandma.

Don't vote for making Spanish education compulsory (or at least more accessible) in schools because Mexicans will take over the world.

Don't go to France because they hate Americans. (J'adore France et Quebec, merci, et je parle francais - alors, je suis "anti-Americaine?")

And for the love of all that is holy, don't vote for same-sex marriage!

Here! Watch our video about how evil it is! See? It will destroy families and your children will learn about homosexuality in school whether YOU WANT THEM TO OR NOT! There will be NOTHING you can do!

*cue the horror music here*

Seriously, WTF? If you want to argue something with me, give me an argument. Don't try to make me hate. Don't try to make me afraid. Give me facts and evidence. Give me logic and supported points. Do not insult my intelligence with rhetoric and fear-mongering.

I bought a plane ticket the day after they went on sale after 9-11, and I'd do it again (they were cheap, man!). I am fully aware that nothing anyone can do can make me 100% safe, and I'm alright with that. I also know that any children in my life (and adults, for that matter) are going to learn things every day that I would choose to present another way, but you know what? It's my job as their parent, friend, teacher, aunt, etc, to take those things and help them deal with them in a positive way, not pretend those things don't exist.

I saw the commercial I've just described today, because I live in Maine. In Maine, on November 3, 2009, the general public is going to vote on whether or not the bill passed by our governing body to allow same-sex marriage this past summer should remain law or be struck down. The opposition to this bill is being led by the same folks who masterminded the Prop 8 debacle in California.

Suffice to say that you can mark me down as one in the "do not repeal the law" category.

September is probably my favorite month here in Maine. The tourists are gone, the beaches are open, and there's just a touch of color to the leaves and frost in the air. It's absolutely gorgeous. And maybe this fall, we can make it even prettier. Equality for all, says I.

VOTE NO on 1

Maine, the Way Life Should Be

For the record, though I think it matters not one whit to this, I'm straight and have been married ten years. So there.
