And funny story about "unionized." Once, when I was in college, someone had one of those "ways to tell if you're dating a chemist" type things on the wall. I read it one day and snorted at most of the things, but then I got to the one that read:
Ask them to pronounce unionized.
My brow furrowed and I tilted my head. I read the word again. And again and again. I didn't get it. I sounded it out aloud, putting emphasis on the different syllables. I said UN-ion-ized and un-ION-ized and un-ion-NIZED, and I just didn't get it. I could not figure out another way to pronounce the word. I honestly decided it was a typo or something or that I was just dumb and didn't get it. I stood there for several minutes, and nothing changed. I eventually gave up.
It was years before I figured out the other day to say it. No lie. Years. And it just came to me one day, out of the blue. I was driving in my car and it hit me. Weird. But totally true. My union relations would likely be mortified. Fortunately, I had figured it out by the one time when I used those connections for something (sold out Tribe tickets FTW!).
Now, because of that, I generally actually read the non-science word in my head. But when I saw these jokes, for the first time in a long time, I didn't. Uncharged particles foreva! ;)
