Ilya had known jealousy before.

Not often, but enough to recognize it.

And jealousy was his heart clawing its way out of his chest. Ripping and tearing and wailing to be set free. Jealousy was action, and so demanding that he couldn’t feel anything else.

This was different.

This was his heart at his feet. Sodden and quiet and still. Oh so very still.

And though he was loath to admit it, though he’d been trained from birth to ignore it, Ilya knew what this was too – and it was far more familiar.

This was fear.

And he felt everything.
