It helped.

It really did.

But only a little. As much as he loved Ricky, the bear wasn’t enough.

Not on nights like this.

Not when he was broken and couldn’t figure out exactly why; when his nerves were jangled and he was a hair’s breadth away from crying.

No, on nights like this, only one thing could settle him.

But his partner wasn’t there.

And he wouldn’t be for a while yet.

So for now, Ricky helped – some.

Until the door swished open and after just one look, strong arms encircled him.

And in the morning, things were better.
