Hugh knew he was being ridiculous.
It was a minor procedure.
He’d had worse.
And he was seventeen, for crying out loud. Nearly a legal adult. So much so that he’d insisted he do this on his own.
Still, he was nervous. Much more so than he was letting on. And if his mother hadn’t been there, he might have rescheduled. But that was just delaying the inevitable, he knew, and since she was sitting right next to him, he knew bailing wasn’t an option.
So he stood and walked to the treatment room, alone and with his back a touch too straight and his chest puffed out a little too much to be natural. And if the backpack he had slung over one shoulder just so happened to hold the fluffy bit of courage he’d taken to every medical appointment since his infancy, so be it.
No one would know.
And as he slid the backpack around to hug it to his chest, he was sure that it looked like he was just holding it more securely, and that his secret was safe.
After all, Ricky couldn’t tell.
But he didn’t have to.
Hugh’s mother’s smile said it all.
