It was dead silent – just the way she liked it – until he decided to speak.
“Figured I’d find you here.”
A man’s voice coming from the rafters of a secluded cabin would have startled most people, but this particular cabin’s previously lone occupant barely reacted.
“How’d you know?” she asked, not even moving in response to his words.
He shrugged. “It was either here or Nepal. And this time of year? I hedged my bets.”
“Good guess,” she said, huffing a small laugh and finally turning toward him.
He smirked. “Wasn’t a guess.”
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever.”
She looked him up and down then, and he did the same to her before asking for confirmation as he flipped off the beams near the ceiling and landed on the floor with a soft thud.
“You okay?”
“Bullet in the shoulder,” she answered.
He snorted. “Not what I meant.”
“I know.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Question still stands.”
She mulled this over before answering slowly. “I’m good enough. You?”
“Same.”
“How’d you make out?”
He gestured to his left leg. “Stabbed in the thigh, not much else.”
Her eyebrows rose at that last part. “Not much else?”
“Just the usual,” he said, shrugging again.
She nodded in understanding. “Everything hurts?”
“Pretty much. And then some.”
They quieted, both looking at the floor and lost in thought, but soon, she broke the silence.
“Stay a while?”
“Think we can?”
“A few days, probably.”
He chewed the inside of his cheek thoughtfully for just long enough that she wasn’t sure of his answer. Because no one knew what to do next, least of all them. But when he spoke, his trademark smirk was back in place. He nodded to her shoulder.
“I’ll change that bandage if you make coffee. Maybe share the good drugs.”
She hesitated too, but then she grinned back and a moment later, Natasha Romanoff answered Clint Barton in the only way she could.
“Deal.”
